Characteristics of Yamaska
Cropping Season- Very late season
- Good eating qualities
- Good tolerance of powdery mildew and Botrytis
Yamaska has a very late and concentrated cropping season, fruiting 10-12 days after Elsanta.
Fruit Quality
Yamaska produces very large, dark red, glossy fruit. Flesh is dark throughout and fairly firm. The fresh fruit stores well for up to 5 days at room temperature.
Fruit Yield
Yamaska produces similar yields to the cultivars Joliette, Oka, Kent, Glooscap, Chambly and Bounty.
Plant Characteristics
Plants are vigorous and produce 2-5 inflorescences each. Performance is good on both light and heavy soil types. Some of the flowers are male sterile, the use of pollinator varieties such as Alice or Florence may be needed to improve fruit yields.
Disease Resistance
Yamaska has good tolerance to powdery mildew (Podosphaera aphanis). Plants are moderately susceptible to the six North American Eastern races of red core (Phytophthora fragariae). Semi-resistant to leaf scorch, leaf blight and leaf spot has been observed. Good tolerance to grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) fruit rot was noted in trial evaluations.
Use of the Variety
Yamaska is recommended in areas where the climate is similar to that in the strawberry production areas of Quebec, Canada. It is useful where there is a need to extend the strawberry season.
Plant Supply
Yamaska is protected under Community (EU) Plant Variety Rights Grant No. EU 13337. The propagation and sale of plants, or parts of plants, of Yamaska without a licence is prohibited. Only Propagation Licence holders can propagate and receive propagation grade material (and not Sales or Growing-on Transformation Licence holders).
