Characteristics of Joan J
Cropping Season- Excellent sweet rich flavour
- High fruit yield
- Good fruit size
- Tall, erect, spin-free cane
- Ideal choice for amateurs and pick-your-own growers.
In Southern England the primocane crop starts to ripen at a similar time to that of Autumn Bliss, but a higher proportion of its crop ripens in early August.
Fruit Quality
The most striking quality of its fruits is the fleshy texture, which provides a remarkable, mouth-feel experience. Flavour is also excellent. Fruit colour is only slightly dark on the cane, but tends to darken rapidly after picking. Picking the fruit daily is recommended. The skin of the fruit is not as strong as its overall texture.
Fruit Yield
Typical yields are 20% higher than those of Autumn Bliss. The earliest fruits typically weight 6g, the overall average fruit size is 5g.
Plant Characteristics
The stout canes are spine-free and numerous, and their growth is vigorous, tall and erect.
Use of the Variety
The earliness, large fruit size and excellent eating qualities make the variety an ideal choice for amateurs and pick-your-own growers.
